Alexis Bledel: "It Was an Organic Ending for Rory"
Finally, the interview we've been waiting for: Alexis Bledel talked to TV Guide about leaving Rory behind and her new movie. While Alexis isn't as candid as costar Lauren Graham about the details of why Gilmore ended, she still seems happy with the conclusion and what Rory's up to now.
Some highlights:
On why it was important to her that Rory ended up single: "I felt pretty strongly that I wanted my character to finish up somewhere that we would have liked to see her finish when the whole story started, because she was so driven and academic and I wanted to return to that in some ways."
On ending the show now instead of later: "For it to end this way felt good to me, because I think we would have been trying to come up with things if we had done more [episodes]."
What do you think of Alexis's comments? Will you be checking out her new flick, I'm Reed Fish (with Jay Baruchel from Just Legal!)? Read the full interview and tell us what you think!
Comments
I don't think it should have ended, people and kids grow up. Does not matter if on TV or real life. "Friends" got married and had babies, it was on for 10 years.
I think they should continue Gilmore girls.

I am soooooo deppressed that Gilmore girls has ended...and even more depressed that tristan dugrey never had a comeback. after all these years i was rooting for them....Logan was coool too....but yea, alexis is getting a bit too old to play rory. I hope she and lauren work together again in the future!

I have been watching 'Gilmore Girls' since I was about 16. However, Even though I love 'Gilmore Girls' and would obviously love to watch a reunion of some sort, I have to say that it is time for the actors to move on in their professional careers.

I understand that many fans feel cheated, people want the happily ever after. But the show was always about a family mother and daughter dynamic, and at some time the baby must fly from the nest. So the ending was as good as any. (I really wasn’t interested in big TV marriage extravaganza. so it worked for me)
I can’t fault Alexis for being tired of being Rory, the cadence of the show was tiring at times to watch, let a lone learn lines for. And I hear days on set are twice that of a normal work day, so I can see how a young person could be burned out, especially when that was all she had ever known. Someone older with more Hollywood disappointments might not be so quick to move on.
But Alexis is a beautiful young woman, who proved herself as a talented actress. I wish Alexis the best of luck in her future endeavors. Though she will always be Rory to me.

Reading the interview I must say how disappointing it was. It seems like she really didn't concern herself with how the fans felt at all. I have seen two of the movies she's been in nondiscript characters nothing to get excited about. She said she wanted to try something different spread her wings. with the character of Rory she could have done that all grown up facing the real everyday day world with it's chalenges. However I guess it was not ment to be. In the words of the late great Jerry Orbach when you have a hit you don't walk away.

Many viewers make good ratings and good ratings mean success, success and a name in the industry means more work, more money, and a certain security for the future (not to mention many benefits in kind). By our loyalty, we helped Alexis acquire all that. It's debatable if she owes us anything, but in my opinion she does, and if she doesn't owe us, she certainly owes the show and its creator Amy Sherman-Palladino. It feels like she didn't take any of this into account when deciding to leave the negotiating table. For her, the show came to an organic ending, just because there was nothing more to tell about Rory (again, debatable). A bit egocentric, in my opinion. She's given to understand that she's tired, and who are we to judge about that, but couldn't a longer hiatus remedy all that, couldn't they just schedule the shooting of a short season 8 a couple of months later? I just wish somebody (Amy Sherman-Palladino?) could make her change her mind and look at things from a broader perspective than just hers and Rory's alone. That it would make a world of difference for so many disappointed fans..........

I understand that working on the same show for seven years is a very long time, and that it can be exhausting, this one particularly. I understand the need to try something new, I do. What I don't understand is why an actress would willingly alienate her (main) fan-base, when all that was needed was a short season 8 (ie, three or four months of work, and for way more money!) to make everybody happy, why not even Alexis herself. With the Barack Obama story-line, there was (IS!!!!!!!!) every possibility of making Rory's role smaller, perhaps even cameo-like. We don't need to see her finding a new boyfriend, although the break-up with Logan was poorly done (especially out of character for Logan). We might want to see her bumping into Paris again and consolidating that friendship (now we're left wondering if it even was a friendship after all!), or getting that ultimate dream-job at the New York Times, but those storylines don't require loads of screen-time. I'm just afraid, a) that she doesn't have a clue that her fans needed to see the other storylines get a proper resolvement, or that some people were watching this show for more than just her character, and b) (I hope not) that she really couldn't care less about those fans that made Gilmore Girls and her what they are today. ALEXIS or ALEXIS's AGENT, please think out of the box and have the heart to reconsider! Thanks!

I don't believe she is honestly in touch with her fan base! Her pr people Mr.Michael Flutie and Mr.Paul M. Brown. Has done a poor job at keeping her abreast with what her Fans want. If she believes the Fans are ok with how Gilmore Girls Ended! Of Course WE WANT Rory to Succeed! That is all the essence of the Core of the show was around the strugles of a Single Mom with the help of the entire town the pitched in that was the Charm of it all! Come On She Has to be aware the Fans are Crying OUT Loud and Writing Letters to Advertisers and to all the Corp Heads! And If Her People are not Telling her Then She Needs NEW People Pronto!! If she wants to further her career because Fans have Memories as Long as Elephants!

Didn't care for the interview. I think she's made a bad decision. But whatever she doesn't seem to care about the fans either. Just did she had to do to get it over with.

You're very welcome! I didn't mean to come off as rude in my submission, I just really cannot stand Michael Ausiello. He may think he has the world between his fingers, but his writing is so childish and completely unprofessional. I don't want him to have any more attention than he thinks he already gets. :)

It's to bad she feels that way about the show. Personally I think the potental of more story lines for Gillmore Girls could have been almost unlimited. Oh well Alexis good luck with your career, you just keep on making movies that nobody cares about or wants to see.

Thanks for catching our error, Anthony! I've made a correction.

Alexis did NOT talk to Ausiello at TV Guide. Look at the author's name again for that article.
STOP GIVING THAT NAUSEATINGLY SELF-OBSESSED AUSIELLO MORE ATTENTION THAN HE DESERVES. He makes people sick....good God!
