Supernatural Brings the Creep Factor

Yikes. We are now officially seriously creeped out. Those kids! The clingy atmosphere, the too-affectionate words, the foreboding sense that these kids could be anywhere and you just can't get away. Brrrrr. Supernatural knows just how to push our buttons. It could be weeks before we'll be able to walk past a day-care center or park.

This was a much more effective episode when it came to outright menace, we thought. The scenes with Katie and her mom were horrifying -- the mom was amazing at projecting a sense that something was just wrong, and no one would believe her. By the time we got to the scene where she tries to drown the thing masquerading as her child, then comes home to find her drip-drip-dripping in the kitchen, demanding ice cream, just made our skin crawl. Gah!

We were less impressed with little Ben, or Dean 2.0. Sure, it was funny at first, seeing the parallels between the guys, but we have to agree with one comment we saw -- wardrobe and hair gel aren't genetic, folks. Even if Ben was Dean's kid, would he really share every single one of Dean's mannerisms -- as an 8-year-old> We just thought they laid it on a bit think.

But even with that, we loved watching Dean's increasingly panicked double-takes as he registered the similarities. Jensen brought it this week, from his early, confused moments at the party, to his "bonding" with Ben in the park ("Somebody's got to teach him how to kick a bully in the nads!") to his conversation with Lisa at the end. Great job.

Jared impressed us, too -- every moment he was on screen, every move he made, we got the impression that some part of his brain was chewing away at how to get Dean out of his deal, and trying to solve the mystery of why this all happened. The changes that wash across his face as the gets the news that everyone Mary ever knew is now dead, the look in his eyes when he tried to menace Ruby -- great, great work.

And what about Ruby? Had you predicted she was a demon? We started to get inklings, but were still taken by surprise by her nonchalant reveal. We're liking this storyline -- it's got potential. Sam may be able to use her, but it's a dangerous relationship. She's using Sam for her own purposes, and we can't really trust anything she says. She could turn on them at any time. Awesome.

What did you think? Scary, or slow? Are you liking Ruby's character now that you know she's a demon? Were you hoping Ben really was Dean's kid? Vote in our bounty of polls, and tell all in the comments!

I really enjoyed this episode. Those little changeling kids may just be scariest monsters yet on Supernatural.

I thought the mini-Dean stuff was funny and gave Jensen a nice opportunity to stretch his comedic muscles. But it was a little too heavy-handed, as was horny-Dean at the beginning. Don't get me wrong, I love that Dean loves the ladies and that they love him back, but he's not usually quite this crude. But I get that he's still putting up a front for Sam so I'll go with it for now.

I did really like Lisa and the last scene with Dean just about broke my heart for him. Once again Jensen knocked it out of the park.

I was however disappointed that we didn't get any reaction from Sam about the possibility of mini-Dean being baby Dean. Jared excels at the shiny eyes of brotherly-love and doom. A tiny reaction scene, like Dean's flinch in Heart for example, would have really given this episode the extra bit of, well, heart :D

The Mommy Winchester mystery is deepening and I cannot wait to see how that unfolds. But I'm still not sold on Katie Cassidy as Ruby. Hopefully she'll be able bring more power and menace to the role as she gets more comfortable.

Next week's episode looks hilarious. I'm so glad the summer hiatus is finally over.

Better than last week but still not the Supernatural I love. Don't like Dean and Sam separated so much. I know it makes sense within the story but they don't have to remove so much of the connection they had. Sam obviously knew about Ben so that means Dean must have told him Lisa had a kid. Would have liked to have seen that or any little scenes like that to show that they are communicating even if they are in different places concerning the deal. Reducing their scenes to just exposition, as someone else mentioned, is just boring.

Shoving Sam off with Ruby and Dean off with Bela, as I'm sure they'll do, just sucks. Separating the guys to such a degree is just plain unsatisfying. They can be at odds and have different goals and still be in the same room ya know. Such a drastic drop in brotherly moments is palpable and just plain unSupernatural.

Ruby is annoying. Katie can't act her way out of a paper bag.

Give me back my Winchester Brothers!

Give me back my show!

I dont care what the writers and the episode actually said i still think that Ben is definetley Dean's kid...come on it has to be...i think he should...Dean needs something to leave behind except for his impala!!! LOVED THE EPISODE...SO CREEPY...I LOVE YOU JARED AND JENSEN!!!!

I loved this episode and I am not getting the negativity in some of these comments.
CREEPY. Yeah. Holy cow. The kid banging on the door while the mother is in the bathroom ... that scared the beejeezus out of me. And, of course, the table saw scene. Yep. I was scared.
Ben was great. I totally did not care that he was a little too like Dean in non-genetic ways because JA was friggin' hilarious. By-the-way, I haven't seen anyone else post this and maybe I am way off base, but I'm not convinced that Ben is NOT Dean's. I think Lisa might have been lying (she certainly has reason to).
Ruby: Thank you, Kripke. She is great. You were right, and I completely rescind my demand for her gruesome death. Let's keep her!!
Sam: Wow. Just WOW, JP. The acting was AMAZING this episode. The scene on the phone and then with Ruby. Sam was scaring me. It was just as good as BUaBS!!!!
How anyone could complain about this episode is beyond me. Kripke, don't listen to them!!! It was great. A+ from me.

Ok first off, in the polls you guys need to have a all of the above choice as well. There are just some things I can't decide between.
As for the ep itself, it totally ROCKED!! I loved every heart pounding, scary, funny, awwww moment of it. It was total perfection. I had guessed the Ruby part, but still was screaming OMG when she revealed it.
This is gonna be a kick ass season!!
Well done Kripke, well done to all the crew & massive kudos to the cast, they brought it all to life brilliantly. I think Ruby is awsome!!!

I loved this episode! For my money, Kripke and company are still making the best show out there. The incredible mix of scares, humor, fear, pain, love, angst, and the two most believable brothers on television is appointment TV for me. I don't understand fans who claim that the show has been ruined or that either brother has been denigrated in any way: the storylines rock, and the Winchester brothers rule.

I loved this episode. But I'd like more scenes with Dean and Sam together...

I liked this episode.
Although i'm very glad Ben was not Dean's kid. That's not a road I want them to go down.

Dean was more toned down in this episode, compared to the premiere, so that was good. I hope that continues on.

This episode has some very creepy scenes. The little girl and her mother, were excellent. Lots of chills this week.

The brother's were a little more seperated then what I would have liked. Although I understand why it's necessary for the moment.

I thought some of what they did with Ben, as far as character qualities being similar to Dean, were a tad overdone. It wasn't necessary to lay it on quite that thick.

I'm still on the fence about Ruby. So far i'm not hating what I see though, which is a good thing. If it continues to be done right, the character has potential.

Both Jensen and Jared continue to amaze me with their acting. Both really brought it this week.

I miss Dean.

All the Belas and Rubys in the world (and so far one of them is an indifferent actress) can make up for the loss of what SPN used to be.
Did you have to change the entire show sooooo much?
I feel sorry for Jensen, having to make Dean look like a jerk without the charm he used to show.
*sobs*

Hmmm...I'd rate this episode at about a 7/10.

This episode definately gets points for being the creepiest episode I've ever seen. Also, loved watching Sam still in full-on research mode in trying to find a way to save Dean. (Though he is a lously liar.) The Dean/Ben and Dean/Lisa stuff was cute and I enjoyed most of the scenes, but thought that that bouncy castle scene could have been cut to give us a short scene between Dean and Sam at the end. This brings me to the major minus about this episode...NOT ENOUGH BROTHERLY MOMENTS! It's not that I want Sam and Dean joined at the hip, but just a small sentimental scene after Dean had left Lisa's house for the last time would have been nice. Something where Sam encourages Dean and where Dean gives Sam yet another reason to try harder even if he doesn't know it. All in all, I think that this episode was a bit too crowded and am hoping that the coming episodes are a bit more focused.

I disagree with Galveston in that while I agree that it makes sense that the boys will be separated enough to allow Sam to still research without Dean having to know about it, there were a few different areas in this episode where they still could have been working together. Letting them talk just to get the exposition for the episode out there is boring.

Also if they trusted us as adults to get it then they really didn't have to lay on the "OMG Ben is so much like Dean" stuff so thick. They apparently didn't think we were intelligent enough to make the connection based on the date Dean would have gotten with her and some more SUBTLE connections. Like the recap here said, the majority of Ben's traits were NOT genetic and frankly made no sense that he'd act like that based on what we saw as his upbringing. Unfortunately that's an issue I have with a lot of Sera Gamble's episodes because her writing does come across more heavy handed with a lot of these kinds of issues.

As for Ruby, I like it better that she's a demon. However, she pretty much just reminds me of a more irritating version of Meg. I really hope that the boys don't start trusting her because that would put them at a huge risk. So with the black eyes does this mean she's possessing a human? Because that's another issue that needs to be talked about if that is the case and the boys don't try and get the demon out of her.

Dear Krip & Co...

This episode was not enough to make up for the way you guys chewed up and spit out Dean last week. Sorry. Returning Dean to what (we fans were thinking all this time) was his natural order, too late you killed it.

I love what Ben symbolized. A smack to Deans subconscience, a means of perspective to his lifes' meaning as well as giving him a chance to see himself as an outsider looking in. And while nothing is wrong with just leaving the Metallicar behind as a legacy, I love for once Dean had a real thought of a future that was outside of hunting.

I will though roll my eyes at the obvious that is Ruby. Just because we liked Meg doesnt mean you can rehash her into Ruby. We would love to see Meg not Meg -2.0 (yes that is reading negative two point zero). I seriously hope for the sake of my entertainment this isnt what we have this season.

I am and will only stay with the show to see the outcome of Deans deal. I owe that much to myself and will endure the rest of the season as best as I can.

BTW Disenchanted, I really agree with your comment.

Better than last week, but I dunno the whole show just seems 'different', like Dean said about possessed John!
It's brighter, it's far more rushed and the story's more contrived.
I think the separating the boys has been done for several reasons (some of them way off-camera) and the 'story' has been manufactured to fit this purpose rather than because it's a great story to begin with.
I still don't think this is our Dean (bring back the guy with the big heart) and I don't like that there's no brotherly interaction - makes it a bit boring.
Ruby is just whatever to me - far too Buffy-esque.
Sam's part is a head-scratcher and the mythology is now a bit laughable - anti-Christ? What?
I like that he's only thinking of Dean though, why can't I see what Dean is thinking about Sam - it makes no sense that Dean wouldn't be wanting to spend time with his brother. If he can't bring himself to spend time with Sam - I like to see WHY! What about some character continuity there? But as I said, separating Sam and Dean seems very important to the show right now.
Please bring back Supernatural soon. You know, the one with the BROTHERS, fans are very didvided on the new season, we all pretty much used to love it.

I was afraid of the thought of Dean having a kid but Ben was just adorable and I was a little disappointed that he wasn't Dean's after all (even though part of me knew he wasn't). My favorite of the humor scenes would have to be when Dean ran into the trash can after doing the math of how old Ben was.

I think Ruby is a great twist. The whole is she good, is she evil thing is really cool. I also like that she offered up the possibility of her saving Dean, she could quite easily be manipulating Sam. After all, we all know he'd do anything for his older brother.

All in all, I liked this one far better than the last and I'm looking forward to Bela's character being introduced. From what I can tell, she's got a british accent.

Now this episode is what attracted me to Supernatural in the first place! I was a little concerned after the opener for the season, but this had all the great stuff: creepy kids, humour, brotherly (though only a little) interaction and revelations. I'm so happy that Ruby is not a human, though I'm not sure about the acting ability of Katie. I think this lends a very interesting bent to the story: can they trust her or not? I'm loving that Sam seems to be coming into his own finally, I was always a little annoyed at how easily he allowed Dean to look after him - especially at the ages of them now. I mean really - how many 20+ guys want the big bro to treat them like a little 'sister' all their lives? Sam's keeping secrets, while Dean's trying to deal with what's left of his life. I'm personally happy to see some of the heavy 'tears and angst' settle a bit; cocky Dean and a strong Sam is going to be interesting.

I'm hoping the writers will show Dean going thru the different stages of acceptance for his 'terminal' situation. And I think both guys did a terrific job this time - really stepping up to the plate. Jensen has had a great chance through the last two seasons with a complete turn-around of character - so it will be interesting to see what more they can pull out of him. Jared is finally getting a chance to do something other than be all angsty and teary. He's going to be much more determined and stronger now I hope, and stepping out of Dean's shadow. I'm looking forward to seeing a whole range of emotions from him while trying to save Dean, figure out his mother's secret - while keeping secrets from Dean and trying to deal with this demon. Both boys will have a lot on their plates and it looks like they're ready to deal!

I'm so glad that Ruby is a demon (ha ironic huh?). When it was leading up to her reveal and she was talking about Mary I had this strange feeling that Kripke was going to drop a bomb and then it kind of hit me. "Crap she better not be their sister"
I started repeating to mys elf "please don't let it be their sister, please don't let it be their sister". I was sooo glad those black eyes flashed. What a relief!

And yeah, pretty much semi-covered my eyes whenever the creepy kids' reflection showed up. I mistrusted shadows in my room after that. Not the best show to watch in a dark house by yourself. Not at all...

Oh and loved the Dean butt shot. Fabulous! And don't forget Sam, he's just gorgeous all around.

Mommy, may I have some ice cream? ACCCKKK!!! No, back to hell with you!!!

Great episode. I think Ruby being a demon was the best thing possible for the story. I read someone calling her a serpent in Sam's Garden of Eden. I like that. Sam won't be able to resist the lure of a chance to save his brother's life.

Also, I understand perfectly why the brothers are apart now--it's a matter of treating your audience like adults and trusting them to understand that Sam has to avoid Dean right now if he wants to help him out of the deal. Dean will kick his butt if he finds out. Dean's desperately trying to keep up his facade; he can't let his guard down or he'll be buried by his emotions. There will be a payoff down the road in terms of brotherly moments if the audience will be patient. The writers are not spoon feeding us, and I for one appreciate it. They expect us to get it. I know we can.

I really liked this episode!!! I think it was one of the best ones. It got me sitting at the edge of my seat after every scene! The kids were creepiest thing ever! i was afraid to look in the mirrors after that episode! Looking forward to more great episodes! :) Ruby being a demon is good for the show... she adds a twist in the stroyline.. can't wait to see what happens next! ;)

This episode is the embodiment of the Supernatural spirit. It had the "feel" of SPN that the premiere was so direly lacking. This episode had the monster of the week, the humor, the drama and everything that we love the show.

Oh, and I liked Ruby. The negativity is driving me crazy.

Come to think of it I think
Ruby is bad news. I hope
Bela will be okay.

well, this episode was good although, the creepy childern? a bit creepy...but anyways, as said in past episodes, not all demons lie, some tell the truth to mess with your head, so idk, I think Ruby is good for the show, she may not be, who knows, yet, BUT, i didnt like that Ruby turned out to be a demon, i thought she was actually on The Brothers side, an actual human hunter, is what i mean. Oh well, time well tell if shes actually on their side or not.

This eppy was pretty good, a lot better than TM7 in my opinion. Ben and Dean were too cute together and I wouldn't mind Dean hooking up with Lisa again, I liked her.

The changelings were CREEPY! Loved that! And Katie's mom, I really felt for her. The actor was top notch.

Ruby...uh on the fence about her. I'm glad she's a demon but still on the fence.

I was disapointed with the lack of brother interaction because that's what knocked down some of the enjoyment points for me.

All in all 3.5/5

What no one else hated Ruby! Gosh i do! I love bella I think.

I didn't dislike this episode but it isn't a favorite either. I miss the interaction with the brothers. That's mainly what I watch this show for.
As to Ruby, still not sure about whether she's good for the show or not, time will tell.
For those of you upset about Ruby's revelation that its 'all about Sam'...remember DEMONS LIE! What she said may be a total fabrication on her part in an attempt to mess with Sam. Again, time will tell.

I just hope we get more brotherly interaction soon.

(I am going to cheat and repost my thoughts I posted at Hey!Nielsen.)

Last night's episode was a near-prefect follow-up episode for the premiere. The premiere was an introductory episode, resetting the characters, plots, and myths to give new viewers a little bit of information to get them moving in the 'verse. Last night was the punch to the gut that said "When we said we like to toss a salad of humor, drama, gore, and creepy together, we meant it. Have fun!"

Sera Gamble knocked it out of the park. The humor was instantly countered by drama or creepiness. I connected with the side-characters. The gore made me hide my eyes. I was amazed at two scenes that censors allowed to air. Pushing that envelope rocks.

Two thumbs up!

I loved this episode! Ben/Dean scenes were EPIC! I love when Dean interacts with children! Jensen is a force not to be messed with just like Jared, who TOTALLY rocked the house in this episode. I'm warming up to Ruby, I must confess! I love the twist that she's a demon. Just goes to show that not all demons follow the same game. Demon!Ruby's playing things her way and she does it with style. I'm excited to see Bela make her debut next week and I hope she adds to the show story-wise as much as Ruby does. More and more questions are coming up and I can't wait for the rest of the season!

The Monster of Week was excellent and really creepy.

But I think Dean has been replaced by a changeling from Tall Tales. Somebody stake him soon please.

I totally get what the writers are trying to do with Dean. He's once again trying to make the best of a bad situation and protect Sam from himself and Dean's feelings. So I have no problem with the distance between the brothers right now.

But I feel like the writers are laying on the slapstick so thick that it's making it hard for me connect with the character that I usually love so much.

I am loving how Sam is finally thinking about something besides his destiny. It's nice to see more than the occasional glimpse that Sam is as desperate to save and protect his brother the way he's always been saved and protected by Dean.

But I gotta say that's not enough for me to remain devoted to the show especially now that I've been told that it really is all about Sam.

We get the message Kripke - a nice fuck you to all us whiny Dean fans. Of course we wouldn't be nearly so pissed if you hadn't spent two years assuring us that the show was about two brothers instead the story of a guy fighting his derivative destiny o' eeeeviiil and his brother the buffoon.

I loved it... what an awesome episode. It's definetly the Supernatural i love! And I think Ruby is going to be a nice addition!

In all honesty, I was deeply disappointed by the revelations of Ruby being Yet another demon. I would have rather she be a member of the forces of Good, angel, whitelighter, whatever. I refuse to believe that a door to hell could open and heaven not get involved.

Agree...i loved this episode!Dean was hilarious and jensen is excellent at comedy...absolutely brilliance from Jensen.
Jared Padalecki is completely owning this so far...god the emotions and the desperation had my heart racing.... Jared you are awesome!!Jared as Sam Winchester is a complete genius...loving him!He should lose the cool more often i even jumped when he shouted at Ruby..
