Smallville: Spy Games
With so many big stories in the works on Smallville -- Kara kidnapped! Lana incapacitated! Lex on the cusp of controlling Clark! -- you'd think any detour from the main plotlines would be frustrating. Surprise! We adored this week's Smallville, a Jimmy-centric story chock full of great quips, quick thinking, double crosses and a fair amount of action. Who know Wholesome Olsen had it in him?
We knew we were in for a treat when the episode opened with a ninja-like spy infiltrating some forbidden lair. After several Bond-worthy moves, our superspy revealed himself to be Jimmy Olsen. Poing!
Of course, there's an explanation:
Jimmy was coerced by Domestic Security into spying on Chloe. The Feds know Chloe is hacking into government systems, and they want to know why. Jimmy's going to help them or he's going to prison. It doesn't help that Chloe has been so distant and secretive -- Jimmy is almost willing to believe that she's up to something nefarious, especially when government-issued spyware reveals a whole bunch of illicit activity on the Isis computers.
We know why Chloe's been poking around where she doesn't belong, of course - she's trying to find Brainiac and Kara. Clark is so bent on curing Lana that he can't even bring himself to care that Lex has both Veritas keys and he's on the cusp of figuring out how to control Clark. So Chloe has to find satellite data that would track Brainiac and Kara when they disappeared into the sky - and to do that, she needs to attend a swanky opening-night gala what require black-tie apparel and the occasional hot tango. Whee!
Jimmy tries to do an end run around Chloe and get the information she's going for, but it's a trick - Chloe knew Jimmy was spying and sent him on a wild goose chase. That means it's time for the government heavy to step in and try to beat Chloe's plans out of her. Jimmy uses some of his new spy moves against his erstwhile masters and rescues Chloe. When they get back home, they make up... looks like Smallville's sweethearts are generating a bit of heat again!
Meanwhile, Clark is poring over Dr. Swann's journals, and he finds something odd -- a transmission that wasn't there before! He goes to the Fortress to try to decipher it, and discovers the voice belongs to Kara, not Jor El. She warns Clark that Brainiac is trying to kill him, and that he's got to save Lana and the fortress. Chloe's satellite snooping reveals a vortex when Kara and Brainiac disappeared -- what if he was somehow able to drag Kara into the past, to Krypton before it exploded? He's trying to kill Clark while he's still a baby!
Finally, Lex makes it to Zurich and opens the Veritas box... which is empty. Or is it? A secret compartment reveals a gizmo that seems to involve star charts and slots. What does it do? We're not sure, and before Lex can contemplate it deeply, the bank employee tries to kill him. It seems there are still people out there who want to protect the Traveler.
What did you think of the episode? Did you like the Chloe/Jimmy digression, or were you anxious to dig into the main story? What does Lex's new gizmo do? How will Kara get back from Krypton of the past? Talk about it in the comments!

The plotting in this episode was absurd. In one scene, Lex finds out he can't take off for Zurich; the next time we see him, with no further explanation, he's in Zurich.
Jimmy immediately believes this HSA agent (who I don't believe ever even shows ID) over someone he's known for a long time (and knows very well is no terrorist), then, upon agreeing, immediately possesses skills which take years of training. Then Chloe searches the planet for an entry to the key satellite, then finds it...in an unguarded room!! In which all the computers are running and ready for her to start typing on! Then there was the usual ridiculous element that both she and Jimmy are able to sit down at computers they've never seen before and start typing at 70 words per minute.
That's just for starters. I can't even remember all the absurdities there were so many. This was perhaps the most ridiculous episode ever, and I say that despite being a HUGE Chloe (Allison) fan and very happy she got so much screen time.

This episode was awesome! I didn't know Jimmy had it in him! I definetly think they are going to do a plot where he is some kind of super agent that he has been hiding all along! So cool! The tango was the hottest scene in this episode!! The kiss at the ending was very hot also. :) I can't wait until next week!
