Supernatural Podcast: "Dead in The Water"
There's an overwhelming sense of dread in this episode, and we ended up pretty freaked out by the end (it didn't help that the lights in the podcasting room flickered ominously while we were watching the scary bathtub scene).

In our Supernatural podcast for "Dead in The Water," Sarah, Mia and I argue about the appropriate way to bathe, love how the brothers balance each other out ("Thanks, college boy!"), and wonder whether or not Wisconsin is inherently creepy. Wee also address the debate in last week's comments.

Great podcast!
And I am glad to hear that you plan to watch both Bugs and Route 666 .. to me it just wouldn't be right to skip over them (though I'm mentally preparing myself for the podcasts - LOL).

Great podcast! First, let's be totally shallow for a moment. How freakin' gorgeous is Jensen in the diner scene at the beginning of this episode?!! The pen in the mouth, flirting with the waitress, and ... just ... gah! So incredibly gorgeous! Ahem, anyway...
Whenever I think of young Dean taking on the huge responsibility of having to take care of little Sammy (and his Dad, for that matter), it just breaks my heart a little. He was definitely more of a parent to Sam than John, it seems. He had to grow up so quickly and he really probably never had much of a childhood himself. So I do think that it's part of the reason he finds "child-like" joy in the little things in life (Pig-in-a-poke!) now as an adult, but I also think it's why he relates so well to kids. And in this episode, I just loved the Dean and Lucas interactions. He definitely saw some of himself in Lucas and just wanted to help the boy. It's at the heart of what drives Dean to be a hunter.
And I agree with Emily about the "herding" tendencies of Dean. I don't know if this was something Jensen just decided to incorporate into Dean's characterization or what, but it's really very sweet. Dean does tend to still act much like a parent to Sam often times, especially in this first season. And it adds a layer of complexity to Dean and Sam's relationship, which is very interesting to see.

Yet another great podcast you guys. I am totally enjoying these.
I agree with whoever mentioned that Dean connects so well with children for a variety of reason but a major one is that he practically raised Sam. In this episode for example - that conversation in the diner at the beginning, after you get past the waitress hitting on Dean and Dean wanting to take her up on her offer, Dean sounds more like a parent than a brother. The first hints come in subtle moments like that. Tones of voice, expressions. Just a hint, keep an eye out for Dean's "herding" tendencies, small touches to guide, etc.
With Lucas aka Danny Bonaduce, in particular, it was also experience. Dean knew what this kid was going through. He'd gone through it himself. His mother was murdered by a supernatural creature like Lucas father's was killed by a spirit. They were both there when it happened. They both stopped talking and withdrew into themselves in the aftermath. Dean wanted to help this little boy in a way that he probably wasn't helped himself.

Touché, Sven. Touché.
Cindy -- You're right, in the first several episodes, the boys are mostly fighting creatures/spirits, not demons, and those categories of beasties follow different rules. I'll make sure to make the distinction from now on.
JustMe -- We're going to watch the whole season, including Bugs and Route 666, because yes, there are important bits. But don't expect those particular podcasts to be very kind!

Hi Sarah, Jackie and Mia
I love the podcasts and I was wondering are you going to do podcasts about Supernatural season 4 when it returns in September?

I'm from Madison and I will agree Wisconsin is pretty creepy.
In fact it gets creepier and creepier the closer you get to Illinois, especially Chicago!

I loved Dead in the Water. I loved how Dean related to Lucas and how he was surprised by the kiss from Lucas' mom at the end.
And what can I say about the scene when Dean pops out of the water with Lucas? Great, great scene!

Another fun podcast. I'm enjoying all of your observations and reactions.
You are all totally right: that Danny Bonaducci kid was a little creepy. But I do adore Dean interacting with kids. One of my favorite things about his character is his ability to take a child-like delight in the simple things. I think it's in part because he actually didn't have much of a childhood at all because he had to spend so much of it taking care of Sam. Also I think he is especially protective of, and relates to kids in distress because of his own damaged childhood.
I remember Jensen saying this episode is one of his favorites because it really helped him understand who Dean was. That makes it a pretty seminal episode for the show so I'm really glad you guys liked it.
Keep up the good work ladies.
I'm also with the people who say you shouldn't skip Bugs or Route 666 because there's some pretty good brother-stuff in both those episodes. However if you're short on time, I would recommend skipping Hookman since it's kind of boring, the acting by the guest stars is pretty weak and the characterization seemed a little off somehow. But Dean/Jensen sure is pretty in it so that probably makes it worth a watching. :-)

Nice podcast guys. Glad the newbs enjoyed Dead in the Water! :D It was a real character enchancing episode but it bored me at some moments.

I just want to point out a few things ;-)
First of all, all of the creatures the boys hunt aren't demons. Demons are a totally separate entity. They hunt all sorts of supernatural creatures and monsters and spirits. Spirits are banished with salt and burning of the bones. The Wendigo was a creature, black dogs are creatures, the kid in Dead in the Water was an angry spirit, etc.
Demons don't really enter the show until later in the first season, with the exception of Phantom Traveler, where the boys encounter their first possession - they even say that they aren't familiar with demons and possession.
Another thing - I think that even though Dean does embrace his inner child, I feel he is able to bond with kids mostly because he practically raised Sam, so he has been a 'parent' himself for most of his life.

I love all of yours podcasts, specially Supernatural's "Wendigo" and OTH's "Crash Course Into Polite Conversation"!
Jackie, Sarah and Mia, you guys rock my socks! And I'm just as smitten by Dean as your guys are, and I'm a Supernatural die-hard fan since the beggining...Sammy is great, you gotta love him, but Dean...sight.
Don't mind last podcast bitching...Some fans I can't separate fiction from reality. I don't completely agree with everything you guys say (except for the whole Lucas-bashing thing, I despise him 100%) but I don't think being rude it's the way to go too.
Keep podcasting!
;D
Lou
(ps: Brasil's hearing you too!)

Great podcast. Ahaha, Wisconsin is apprently the scariest state.
I agree that the first few episodes are mostly Dean-centered, and I also think it's because not many people knew him before thise, unlike Jared.
I'm really excited for more podcasts, because Supernatural is an amazing show!!! Keep up the good work.

I love your podcasts! I got hooked on the One Tree Hill podcasts and picked up Season One of Supernatural when I saw that you'd started podcasting on them. I am a newbie to Supernatural so its very interesting to hear what you all have to say. I'm haven't decided which brother I like better or even if I have a favourite...
I really enjoyed this episode. I completely agree with you guys about that kid. He was REALLY creepy!
Thanks again for the podcasts and I look forward to the next one!
