Melrose Place: Mid-Season Report Cards Are Out

During the mid-season break it is also traditional to discuss what is working and not working so much, which is where our friends at TV Guide come in. They recently issued report cards and slapped grades on all of the new shows that premiered in the fall and are lucky enough to still be around.
Can't we get some extra credit here?
While we typically agree with the fine folks at TV Guide, we take offense to the grade they gave our Melrose Place: C+. They say that the murder mystery started strong but fizzled and the cast (other than Ella) is still waiting for a compelling story line. Hello? Med school by day and hooking by night? Stealing valuable art from your own father? What's not compelling about THAT?
What would you do?
With our incredible cast of characters the sky’s the limit. What do you think should happen to your favorite (and not so favorite) MP characters in the second half of the season? Tell us here in the comments.

Hello, well.. first of all, I would like to say that the show was one of my favorites, but...I would like to add them the credits of the intro, I know it sounds ridiculous but that was one of the first things I liked the show.. and many people would be agreed, and then.. why letting go Violet and Auggie? Why not adding them more drama and make Violet to go crazy and create the new Kimberly 2010? I bet it could be amazing... but well.. let's see what's gonna happen...

THE BIGGEST "FLAW" ABOUT THE NEW VERSION OF MELROSE PLACE IS THAT IT HAS NO BITCHES. LAUREN HAS BECOME A HOOKER, BUT THAT DOESN'T MAKE HER UNETHICAL -SHE IS STILL A GOOD GIRL. JONAH AND RILEY? CAN'T THINK OF MORE GOODNESS. AUGGIE? HE DIDN'T DO ANYTHING BAD. ONLY ELLA AND DAVID ARE A LITTLE BITCHY.
THE BIGGEST PROBLEM ON THE NEW MELROSE IS THAT ALL THE CHARACTERS ARE ETHICAL WHICH LEAVES NO ROOM FOR DEVELOPING DRAMA.

TV Guide is right on the money. The murder mystery started out awesome, but the way it was played out through cheesy flashbacks was tacky. The med school by day, hooker by night WOULD be compelling if something was actually happening! When the show brought on the amazing Kelly Carlson to play Lauren's madam, I was expecting some bite - but the potential there wasn't explored at ALL! And David stealing art is incredibly boring. The show should have kept Auggie and bounced David. More Amanda inserted in the lives of the others would be great, and the dialogue is a bit tired and remedial. The original show had so much zing in the trashy dialogue, and it pushed the envelope in what they could get away with on network TV. If The CW is trying to make 'Melrose' the racy drama it should be, you've gotta keep up with the times. When there are wild shows like 'Nip/Tuck' and 'Desperate Housewives' on TV, you've got to shake it up more than that.

Longer story arcs that effect/impact many characters - ones that intertwine with lots of twists and scandal. Bring original characters back! (I'm REALLY sad about Syd). Where are the gay characters? Push the envelope like the original did. This show should be the edgiest on TV.

Exploring the backstories of original characters is great - and bringing more on would be great - Jake seems to be the one my friends most want to see back on. More scandal, controversy, drama, sex and original characters.

Better writing is key. Also, can't get enough of the characters from the original MP (getting rid of Syd was dumb). MORE drama and A LOT more controversy. MP was one of the edgiest shows on TV in the 90s, step it up a notch. And please bring some gay characters on - that will add drama, controversy, originality and get the show attention and stay true to the original.

I don't think that Auggie was too "dark." They never really explored his character and I think he has potential. Additionally, I'd like to see the writing mirror that of the old "Melrose." That is, each action had a reaction for several episodes (Hello Jo's baby!) and it impacted several characters. Things seem to wrap up neatly at the end of each episode, and it needs the hook to keep everyone coming back week after week.

I think it needs a few more older cast to at least pop up more regularly and explore more of their back-story whilst also integrating the new characters. This has the potential to be a fantastic show!

I kinda agree on the Auggie thing. But I like Riley, it's not her fault that her character is a little boring. She's a great actress, just needs something to work with. I'd much rather see Jonah go cuz I've never seen a character so jealous and full of himself on the show. Melrose Place is a great show and I hope and pray that this show doesn't get cancelled cuz the storylines are improving and it's a much better show than any law, meical drama or some stupid reality tv show!!!!!

I really don't want to see Auggie leave, but it seems to already be in the cards. Hopefully he will not die and may be brought back later.
I also think that the show will get stronger as the characters develop more. Ella seems to have the best developed character, so it's no wonder she is a favorite, but each of the others are getting better, even David who I could have done without at the beginning of the show.
If anyone had to go, I would vote Riley off the island.
