The Swamp

Despite speculation that Barack Obama would speak in front of the historic Brandenburg Gate when he visits Berlin this week, aides to the Democratic presidential candidate say he will not do so.

Instead, aides said Sunday that Obama will speak at the Victory Column, also known as the Siegessaeule, in a park near the gate.

As Obama aides were making plans for the European leg of Obama's trip abroad this week, word began to circulate that someone connected to the campaign had expressed interest in holding an event at the gate - the site of legendary addresses by John F. Kennedy and Ronald Reagan.

That inspired German Chancellor Angela Merkel to voice concerns about the choice, which she raised anew on Sunday. (Speaking on German television, Merkel said that, if Obama or any other candidate is elected, he "is welcome to speak as president before the Brandenburg Gate.")

But aides to Obama say they had never settled on the gate as a spot for the speech. On Sunday, they announced details for members of the public who might wish to attend the free event Thursday afternoon.

The public is being invited to enter Tiergarten Park from Strasse des 17.Juni -- at the Brandenburg Gate.
