Despite speculation that Barack Obama would speak in front of the historic Brandenburg Gate when he visits Berlin this week, aides to the Democratic presidential candidate say he will not do so.
Instead, aides said Sunday that Obama will speak at the Victory Column, also known as the Siegessaeule, in a park near the gate.
As Obama aides were making plans for the European leg of Obama's trip abroad this week, word began to circulate that someone connected to the campaign had expressed interest in holding an event at the gate - the site of legendary addresses by John F. Kennedy and Ronald Reagan.
That inspired German Chancellor Angela Merkel to voice concerns about the choice, which she raised anew on Sunday. (Speaking on German television, Merkel said that, if Obama or any other candidate is elected, he "is welcome to speak as president before the Brandenburg Gate.")
But aides to Obama say they had never settled on the gate as a spot for the speech. On Sunday, they announced details for members of the public who might wish to attend the free event Thursday afternoon.
The public is being invited to enter Tiergarten Park from Strasse des 17.Juni -- at the Brandenburg Gate.

LOL. Good thing Merkel stopped him on his tracks.

Well, his EGO wanted to speak there. Good thing the Germans were smarter. I read -- in Newsweek, perhaps? Or maybe the Swamp -- that he's doing a press conference at 10 Downing Street WITHOUT the prime minister. Now, do you think (as the article pointed out) that the PM could do a press conference in the Rose Garden without our president.
Obama -- I am the Messiah.

Is Obama practicing his "Ich Bin Ein Berliner" comment, given that plagiarism has dotted his speeches before?

The OB loses again, ha. I'm really old and dense, ha. I'm new to this blogging, ha. It beats knitting and bingo, ha.

Too much about Obama. Obama at the gate. What about the full body scans at O'Hare? Bush is a pervert and deviant for allowing the very (porno) graphic full body scans while permitting God knows what and God knows who across the unprotected and inviting southern border to the USA. American citizens are subjected to full body scans while lawbreakers are not given scans, but given kid glove Tx and legal aid. This is insane. Lets invite Obama back to O'Hare. Have him and all his family get the scan. Then ask him what he thinks of the scan-open border hypocrisy. Also ask Obama why the southern border is 50 years behind in technology and personnel than the northern border? What does Obama at the gate think of all of this? Ask Obama.

You expect to much. After all, he is just the Paris Hilton of Politics (famous for being famous). And as far as his Excellent Adventure - he's just trying to get his Forrest Gump on (associate himself with someone else's history/ accomplishment).

Yes. Followed by a chorus of Bomb Bomb Bomb Iran. That will inspire them...won't it?

Haters should go to McCain blog sites. You complain about everything Obama does. Get a life!

Keep it up, haters. Keep telling yourselves Barack is just lucky. The end run around the Chicago machine, the end run around the Clinton machine--just lucky flukes.
Those acclaimed speeches, just empty rhetoric he picked out of a rhyming dictionary. Those huge, Lindbergh sized crowds you're about to see in Berlin, Paris, London--just a bunch of passers by who heard a rumor they were handing out free cell phones. Keep drinking the KoolAid.
We'll wake you up when it's over on Nov. 5.

I wonder if the "Messiah" will speak to his book writings, that so far, don't seem to be getting much coverage from the left wing media. Let me quote some of his great writings':
From Dreams of My Father: 'I ceased to advertise my mother's race at the age of 12 or 13, when I began to suspect that by doing so I was ingratiating myself to whites.'
From Dreams of My Father : 'I found a solace in nursing a pervasive sense of grievance and animosity against my mother's race.'
From Dreams of My Father: 'There was something about him that made me wary, a little too sure of himself, maybe. And white.'
From Dreams of My Father: 'It remained necessary to prove which side you were on, to show your loyalty to the black masses, to strike out and name names.'
From Dreams of My Father: 'I never emulate white men and brown men whose fates didn't speak to my own. It was into my father's image, the black man, son of Africa , that I'd packed all the attributes I sought in myself , the attributes of Martin and Malcolm, DuBois and Mandela.'
And FINALLY the Most Damming one of ALL of them!!!
From Audacity of Hope: 'I will stand with the Muslims should the political winds shift in an ugly direction.'
I bet he wishes he could get this junk "scrubbed" out of his books about now.

With the desperation of the GOP, all I got to say is watch out for snipers on the roof tops, they mat blame it on muslim extremist but many have been blinded by the Obamafication of America to even see such as a possibility

Wow didn't you all work hard to conceal your anti-Obama biases? You need to realize how ridiculous most of your comments are. The Brandenburg Gate can be used for concerts, but an important political figure that over 70% of Germans would vote for if they could should of course not be allowed to give a speech there...you've got to be joking!
Posted by: Matt | July 21, 2008 9:58 AM
Excuse me Matt, Germans can't vote over here, this is for EFFECT for political votes in the U.S. and Merkel saw right thru that. You act as tho Merkel is keeping his German fans from seeing him if he's not at THE GATE ha ha. Their photos may not be as GRAND, but at least they'll get one photo of him over there.

It's not worth arguing your ignorant points any more, DonB, but you seem determined to keep regurgitating this post even though it's chock fulla hooey. It's just obvious you guys ARE getting desparate as support for conservatism is waning.

The Victory Column has a long history of serving as the backdrop for the speeches of socialist politicians.
From the NY Times, July 12, 1938, reporting on a speech by Adolph Hitler:
"The most significant decorations, perhaps, are the huge banners hung from the victory column facing the old Reichstag building and the rising sun superimposed by the German eagle which will form Hitler's background when he speaks."
It is thus fitting that another socialist is making a speech there.

What an arrogant windbag, to think that a non-serving senator of three years somehow has earned the right to speak in that historic place.
Posted by: Jeff | July 21, 2008 12:12 PM
Do you people even make an effort to not sound unintelligent, because it's not working.
Jeff: 1) Obama is a serving senator, and 2) neither he nor his campaign ever claimed to have "earned" the right to speak there.
Teresa: Merkel's not opposed to Obama using the Gate because it might be for effect (isn't that what politics is about anyway?), but because he's not a sitting head of state. Did you even read the article, or were you too caught up in a blind anti-Obama rage to do so? ("Merkel said that, if Obama...is elected, he 'is welcome to speak as president before the Brandenburg Gate.'")
Posted by: Matt | July 21, 2008 12:45 PM
Matt silly boy- I never said Merkel didn't extend an offer if he's elected. Her point she has made is that it's not appropriate for someone campaigning. It's in poor taste, poor judgement, and arrogant and she had no problems making sure it didn't occur. I respect her for that.
Posted by: Teresa | July 21, 2008 2:04 PM
So Obama should be allowed to use the Gate only as head of state, but not while campaigning to be that head of state? That venue can be used for political purposes (post 9/11 speeches), but not by a presidential candidate for political purposes? That doesn't seem arbitrary at all.... Good thing it's not even her call to make--that goes to Berlin's mayor who's being much more rational.
Posted by: Matt | July 21, 2008 3:13 PM
Matt- I know that the mayor commented on that, but you have to realize THIS IS POLITICS not a social visit, he's not about make it appear that he doesn't respect MERKEL!
Posted by: Teresa | July 21, 2008 4:26 PM
Teresa, you need to get your facts straight: both Klaus Wowereit, the mayor of Berlin, and Frank Walter Steinmeier, the Foreign Minister, are openly disagreeing with Merkel's attempted rebuke at Obama. In fact, the mayor publicly said he'd be "delighted" for Obama to do so, in defiance of Merkel's wishes.
Posted by: Matt | July 21, 2008 4:40 PM
Yes Matt-and who yielded more power with Obama!
He's not going to be there at the B. Gate, BUT, you'll be happy to know that you might be able to score an 11X13 glossey where someone has managed to take a photo of him with the B. Gate afar in the distance.....for $19.95 !
Part of that's true ha!
